The benefits to full body workouts…

First things first…

You may at this point be wondering what exactly constitutes a full-body workout? This is a useful question as there isn't just one clear answer, in fact it may vary considerably from one person to another depending on their personal opinion, experiences or knowledge… and that's okay!

With that being said, our view of an effective full-body workout should include challenges for the lower body, upper body and core muscles whilst at the same time elevating the heart rate. At MegaBox, we take this one step further in our full-body circuit based workout by including exercises that; cover a range of opposing muscle groups within the lower, upper and core; challenge the body in different planes of movement; and focus on unilateral exercises to encourage balance, coordination and improve muscle imbalances. Not forgetting the boxing element of the circuit which elevates the heart rate, providing a challenging cardiovascular workout also!

The Benefits…

1 - Simple, Effective and Versatile

Full-body workouts don’t necessarily need lots of equipment to be very effective… a mixture of bodyweight exercises and resistance training with Kettlebells, powerbags, and med balls will provide more than enough stimulus to see noticeable progress.

This also means that full-body workouts are very versatile and can be adapted easily for beginners right through to the most experienced athletes.

2 - Reduced risk of comorbidities

The combination of strength training and cardiovascular training in a single workout has shown to provide greater benefits in reducing heart health risks in comparison to those who choose to only do one or the other. This is still seen even if the total time exercising was exactly the same.

3 - Burn more calories and build muscle

When we choose to perform full body workouts rather than workouts where individual muscle groups are targeted per session, we are choosing a method that will still allow us to improve strength, build muscle BUT burn more calories. This is due to recruiting more effort from various muscles simultaneously. When we increase lean muscle mass we also benefit from an increased metabolism, resulting in our bodies then burning more calories throughout the day even when we are not exercising.

4 - Reduce injury risk

Using full body routines will help reduce muscle imbalances and repetitive use injuries, such as tennis elbow. Targeting several body parts together in one workout will also reduce the likelihood of putting too much stress on one muscle group or joint at any one time. On that note, strengthening all of the major muscle groups within the body will provide protection against common injuries related to overuse such as fractures, ligament or tendon tears, falls and back pain.
